This weekend was my first experience of Barefoot Festival in Leicester and it had me thinking...why on earth have I not been before?!? It was a brilliant event - organised to a very high standard with a beautiful setting and lots and lots of new things to do and see! Not to mention the fact that I got to spend it with some of the most brilliant people - it is the ideal place to catch up with those guys I just wish I saw more often because they make me feel so welcome and at home - you all know who you are ;)
The shopping was a success with me coming home with lots of lovely new shiny things :) I have a new outfit from a superbly talented lady - previews at a show near you soon (it is one of the most beautiful things I have ever worn and can't wait to show off!)
The show was incredible - we saw some beautiful pole dancers - the strength needed to perform this blows my mind, we saw some beautiful dance acts (bollywood, oriental, fusion, cancan and more!), we saw Burlesque (Venus Noir's Circus themed act was outstanding and Keda Breeze with an angle-grinder - WOW!), I met a lady with a stunning voice - thank you hunney for my announcement! and I lit Imajica's fire :D
All acts were amazing and perfect! The audience was one of the very best and the support and people there are just awesome - Thank you to Lousia, Sam and everyone at Barefoot!
You can see my Improvised Performance on the Gallery Page.

Glasgow was amazing! We went North this weekend to study with the stunning Sherri Wheatley and we were definitely made to feel really welcome by the girls of Saravasti Tribal and the Glasgow dancers. Such lovely ladies and a really well organised event - I had such a good time I didn't want it to end! Sherri's two workshops were outstanding and I have returned to England with many new ideas for my own performance - I feel really inspired this week - something I think I needed!
Once again thank you to Laura for organising the show and I must make a special mention to Alexis' fiance Dan - who's improvisational skills and impromptu performance made him the star of the show! Lol!
Pics to come soon!

Back from Gothla UK for another year :(
I can't believe that it's over until 2011 - I don't think I can wait 'till then!!
It was an inspiring weekend with lots of amazing Open Stage performers and some excellent workshops. I'm gutted I missed out on the Friday Hafla though - everyone has been raving about how brilliant the whole show was - next year I am getting my tickets really early!
I started the Gothla experience on Saturday morning with a look around the Souk - the cafe was welcoming and seemed really happy to serve us well and the stalls that were there were really good! I managed to buy a pair of gloves made by the incredible Ariellah so I am a happy bunny :)
The first workshop was Ariellah's Super Strength and Slinky combos - apart from a splinter in my toes the 2 hrs were rich in technique, reflection and strength and my legs were very wobbly after!! I picked up some incredible tips for technique and the use of strength to become slinkier rather than just being pop-lock crazy and it was amazing to learn some of the signature stylisations.
Once we finished it was time to make our way to food which is always nice and a good few hours to get ready (completely different to how it was last year - no costume/routine/time!) I decided on my latest Dark Fusion Boutique outfit which I love as it has a peacock coloured sheen which catches the light but in a dark and faerie-like way...
The Open Stage venue was great - large (eek!) but with a super sound system and a good bar :) The standard of dancing was really high and I enjoyed Invocations, Tracey Lynch, Tasmin Leona, Tanzhexen and Lyza just to name a few - there were over 20 acts and every single one was creative and inspiring in some way - well done to everybody! It was really quite scary as I was last on but once I got out there I had a blast - the music was nice and loud so I could really work the atmosphere and emotion! I hope it went ok and that it entertained...you can see it on my gallery videos page here.
The after party was also great fun - Jaeger with Kerry and Jesse, an hour long toilet chat and lots of dancing was just what I needed to de-stress and relax with super people!
On Sunday we had more workshops in the form of Molly from Deshret and Ariellah once again. Molly's workshop was lovely as it was improvisational combos in the Deshret style and I got to play with my ATS skills with Tasmin Leona - we had many giggles and had as Molly said 'a true improv experience!'. I loved it as I can now see how some of the performances I have seen on youtube have been created and put the moves and format to them.
Ariellah's Darker Side of Movement workshop really got me thinking about my dance presence and over the weekend I learned that the use of line and fluidity is massively important as well as being in the 'zone' and feeling a part of your body (the body part exercise was particularly great for this). I also found that foot-work is an area I wish to develop further....
OOOOH and I discovered chicken tikka on a stick for a half syn - thanks to Leopard print ladybird...she is very ingenious when it comes to awesome snacks on the go!
I hope everyone had an incredible weekend - thank you to all of the Gothla UK team for being megastars - the event is the highlight of my year because of the hard work you do!
04.07.10
This weekend has been one of my favourites so far. I have been performing at local events with my student troupe Temperance and I am so proud of them for being amazing! The routine looks really dramatic and the costumes are superb! Look out for the halter top on the pictures from the event that I'm wearing - Leopard Print Ladybird is a fantastic designer of dark and dreamy outfits - she will be selling some of her creations at haflas and events in the very near future!
I can't begin to tell everyone how happy I am to see all my girls perform - it makes the whole dance thing worthwhile when I know how much confidence performing and learning the routine has given some of these guys and for some this is a huge thing as they have only just started to dance in front of an audience! These guys are gonna be performing at many more events and I am looking forward to dancing with them!
Keep an eye out for us - we will be scaring your way soon!
I am also blown away by the support from friends and family for the girls - thank you to all of you who came to support us :)
Next stop is Gothla UK - eek! I need a routine......:P
27.06.10
Whew! What an absolutely brilliant weekend!! Friday evening saw my students and I performing as troupes for the first time! Some ladies got up and performed for the first time ever and I am so proud of them all!! Ayesha and Laura as Athame did a superb job with our Gothic Geisha routine and Temperance - my Dark Fusion lovelies did a spooktacular show - you looked outstanding! Well done to everyone that took part and thank you to the awesome Khalgani and Prana for coming down to my neck of the woods and performing at the centre - you guys RAQ!!
Saturday saw me getting up at 4am and driving up to Sheffield with the lovely Leopard Print Ladybird Lady Claire. We did two superb workshops with Samantha and Kami and shopped loads at the huge souk! I saw loads of fabulous friends and made some great new ones - I am feeling blessed to be able to meet and stay in contact with some of the most amazing people!
I had to battle my nerves and lack of sleep to perform on the open stage - I am not happy with my performance :( Next year I plan on choreographing properly and taking my style to a whole new level after committing myself to some 'me' time (learning new things/practicing/perfecting technique etc )! You can see the video of my performance in my gallery ;)
Once re-fuelled with coffee we then stopped off on the way home to see the lovely Malika and perform at her Sahara Nights Hafla in Nottingham - this was also superb :) Lovely dancers and super people - thank you for making me feel welcome - I was tired but loved every minute of this event too!
If you are interested to see what my awesome ladies can do they will be performing next weekend at Himley and Stourbridge Carnival - if you pop over come and say hi! We don't bite - yet.......:)

A huge thank you to Beatrice Flowers for organising the Green Hafla last night - what a superb job finding the venue on such short notice AND baking cakes on the same day!! Wow!
It was a great night with many excellent performers from throughout the UK.Always a treat to see Spinning Shandra and Eqyptian Gold were fantastic in their matching outfits. Amethyst was fabulous walking like an Egyptian and Shimmy Armageddon wowed us with another clever routine! Many ATS style troupes were very beautiful to watch - The Koyuki were absolutely mesmerising - always an absolute pleasure to see you guys, as were the Aiyana - fabulous work girls! Lots of super duets too - Imajica Dance company got me wanting to Can Can around the room and inspired with some fabulous Fusion, Lapis Lazuli made me smile with their astounding choreo and close working link (you guys RAQ!!), Beatrice's duet was absolutely gorgeous and it was a first for me to witness Les Dames Du Serpent - I was speechless - perfection in performance ladies!
Well done to all the performers for making the night a real success!!

Had another great night out at last night's 'Close Encounters of the Tribal Kind Hafla' in Haxby, Yorkshire. The first purely tribal hafla I have ever been to did not disappoint! There were some beautiful performances from all of the troupes such as 400 Roses, Tanzhexen and Tribe Zuza, some excellent solo performances from the awesome Beverley Spracklen, Hannah, Lara and Angela and some awesome duets with the likes of Pauline Qu and Asif just to name one set! The stall was another great money spender - Tribe Zuza just about had my last pennies :D It was also excellent to dance as a member of 'The Parliament' - BTS improv performance with Pauline, Sarah and the Sunday gals - it was loads of fun! Thanks guys!
Next week sees me return to Nottingham for the Green Hafla - tickets available here... http://www.greenbellydance.com

It was supported by so many super people who made me feel very welcome - thank you guys :) It was a real treat for me to see Tree Russell and Heike perform - they are both superb dancers and performers and the standard of dancing from the other girls who performed was excellent! I also shopped at a fabulous souk and happened to buy a gorgeous new item of costume - but that is under wraps till my next performance ;)
My next stop is Yorkshire with Pauline Qu and the gang - you can buy tickets here... http://www.britishtribalstyle.com/

About Bex
Bex started her journey in Dance and Performing Arts whilst still in school, studying Ballet, Tap and Contemporary Jazz as well as taking roles in many Drama productions displaying her tendency towards the stage. After a break in her late teens and early twenties where she pursued other artistic avenues Bex was hooked after seeing a Goth belly dance demonstration in a local venue and attended her first Egyptian Class in the Summer of 2007.
It was during this time when Bex first came across Tribal Fusion Belly Dance in the form of Rachel Brice and Zoe Jakes on youtube. She was mesmerised by the skill and presence of the form and set her free time to pursuing teachers that could help her achieve some of the strength and grace of the style. Shortly after this Bex was further inspired by the aesthetics of Ariellah, Sashi and Asharah to name but a few and realised that her gothic stylisation was something she could link her new skills to.
After six months in training with tutors in the classical styles Bex took as many workshops and classes with as many teachers and performers as time would allow, performing and creating choreography as part of a troupe in local events.
One year later Bex found herself leaning towards solo performances and teaching her own classes in the style that she is constantly reviewing and reworking. Utilising her knowledge of performance and the gothic subculture Bex is now a national performer and travels across the country to perform and teach sell-out workshops in Dark Fusion Belly Dance to many rave reviews.
During the short time she has been dancing Bex has been influenced in many Middle Eastern inspired styles - Tribal Fusion, American Tribal Style, British Tribal Style, Saidi, Egyptian and Turkish Cabaret, Gothic Fusion, Dark Fusion and Goth bellydance to name but a few. She is best known for her dark theatrical approach - describing fantasy, feeling and fable through spooky elements and creepy costuming.
Primarily a solo artist Bex performs her spooky theatre throughout various bellydance events, parties, shows and communities. Bex has been seen at events in Britain such as the fantastic Raqs Britannia, Shangri-La Lounge & Gothla UK. She is also a keen troupe member and has been seen performing with her ATS side in Prana.
Bex is a tutor in both Gothic fusion and Egyptian Cabaret styles and is currently teaching adult education classes in the West Midlands. Bex is a fully qualified Teacher of over 4 years, teaching Bellydance in the Adult education sector for just over 1 year. Bex holds a full public liability insurance policy, holds a full SEAL Certificate and is CRB checked.
Bex is available for bookings for shows, events, parties and private tuition in Gothic Fusion Dance - please visit the contact page for information.

Intoduction to Dark Fusion Belly Dance
A 10 week course for Intermediate and Improver level Dancers.
Dark Fusion is a new style of bellydance that is gaining increasing popularity across the globe for its dark and theatrical approach. The style takes elements from American Tribal Style (ATS), Tribal Fusion and Classic Egyptian Cabaret and blends these together to create a look that is striking, groundbreaking and dramatic. This course is the first and only to offer this style to learners in the Midlands on a weekly class basis. Learners will cover many areas in Tribal Fusion Bellydance such as pops, locks and ticks, serpentine movement, dark dramatic presentation, posture, drilling of precise isolations and layering techniques, combinations and routines, floor work, strengthening and conditioning and much much more. Learners will cover basic ATS moves and improvisation to help add broad bellydance knowledge and techniques and will also receive the opportunity to create costumes and perform as part of a troupe if they wish to do so at a later date.
Introduction to Beginner Belly Dance
A fun ten week course that helps build confidence, inner strength and many new skills. During the course learners will discover the beautiful art of Bellydance through the practice of basic hip, arm and hand movements, veil work and fancy props! Learn to move with grace and strength and exercise in a way that is fun and accessible to all shapes, sizes and levels of fitness. A fun atmosphere and friendly tutor will guide you at your pace through the diverse and culturally rich art form. No experience necessary just a good sense of fun!
Introduction to Tribal fusion Belly Dance
After taking the Summer to refresh, revive and study with some of the world's top performers and teachers in Fusion dance, Bex brings you a NEW 10 WEEK COURSE. This course aims to deliver the foundations for Tribal Fusion Belly Dance and is open to all levels of dancer. Bex has designed this course to cover aspects of the style such as pops, locks and ticks, fluid and snake-like motion and strengthening. This term will also include intensive training in the style, look and technique of Tribal Fusion Belly Dance as well as introducing the learner to music, the interpretation of emotion in dance and choreography. You will learn about costuming, travelling steps and introduced to ATS which Bex believes is at the core of Tribal Fusion and is, of course a foundation for the development of the style.
This course is a high energy, fun and beautiful way to develop style, strength and substance - a much lighter sister course to Bex's 'Dark Fusion' classes, we will be using more mainstreamTribal Fusion music (Balkan Beat Box, Beats Antique etc)and movement for a slinky, sensuous performance!!
No experience necessary but some knowledge of Tribal or Egyptian Belly Dance would be beneficial - Arrive early to enrol on the night to ensure your place - they go fast!!
There is a free taster session for new learners to try the Tribal Fusion class before you pay for the course on Wednesday 15th September - contact me for more details!!
Bex offers a range of workshops available for booking. If you would like further details on booking a workshop for your event or details of these please use the contact form.
Workshops Offered Include....
'Zombie-Poppin'
A pop, lock and tick workshop that incorporates Tribal Fusion moves as it's core - students will be introduced to strong technique in sharp, dynamic movements and turns and will work through short combos that focus on drilling of technique as well as adding personal 'spooky stylisation' to movements.
'Spooktacular Serpents!'
A workshop that focusses on the drilling of that sinuous serpentine motion that is so recognisable in Tribal and Dark Fusion Bellydance. Attention will be given to the drilling and perfection of arm, shoulder and torso moves as well as advice given on posturing, hands and the 'look' and 'presence' of a Dark Fusion performer. A short choreography will also be taught giving the student a little bit of the dark side to take home ;)
'VAMP'
Two hours working on the look of the Gothic performer in dance. Bex will explore make-up and application for a deathly seductive look that will hold the audience at ransom! Costuming and accessories will also be discussed and when the class is definitely darker, Bex will give tuition on entrance, holding the audience's attention and the creation of a stage persona that only one from the darker side of dance can hold!
Trick or Treat!
Focussing on many travelling moves and steps, connective motion and showing the student how to take to the stage with character and confidence - this workshop explores the drama involved in wowing (and scaring!) your audience! The perfect workshop if you want to appear more confident in your dance. Be unexpected and keep them on their toes!! Don't get lost on that big stage - Scare the hell out of it!
'The Descent'
A Dark Tribal Fusion workshop covering an introduction to floor work and levels in our dance (with none of those spooky little cave guys!). Bex will work through conditioning and strengthening the body in preparation for multi-level work as well as moves such as the Berber walk and some deep undulations. Also covered will be some layering techniques to make the transition from standing to floor extra sultry!!
More workshops are available - please enquire if there is something you can't see here!
